Lipoedema is recognised as a disease by the World Health Organization,

and is included in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) since 2022. As yet, Lipoedema has no cure and is progressive without intervention.

What can you do about Lipoedema?

There are many areas you can influence to prevent the progression of lipoedema. Some are fundamental and well within your power to control whether you have Lipoedema or not, like nutrition and exercise. Some might feel a bit further out of reach right now. Don't ever believe there's nothing you can do. Here are a few areas to consider in the management of Lipoedema:

  • Nutrition

  • Exercise

  • Compression

  • Physical therapy

  • Skin care

  • Stress mitigation

  • Surgery

Diet and Lipoedema

Diet is a very effective tool in the Lipoedema toolbox to reduce and prevent the obesity, inflammation, and pain frequently associated with lipoedema. It's also a topic fraught with anxiety and controversy as most women with Lipoedema have tried every diet under the sun with no success.

While it's often confidently stated that lipoedema is resistant to diet and exercise, this is not the case. Diet for Lipoedema is specialised and requires attention to metabolic health, skeletal muscle health, hormone regulation, and inflammatory influences. It's not simply a matter of eating less and moving more.

"Women with Lipoedema are discovering that when they eat nutrient-dense foods, in appropriate portions, at appropriate times of the day, things begin to shift - pain and inflammation decrease and often resolve, and body fat levels reduce. Consistency over time causes these subtle improvements to accumulate and build momentum. You CAN enjoy your food, you CAN feel confident with your food choices, and you CAN have a beautiful life with Lipoedema."

There is no "one-size fits all" dietary approach to Lipoedema

Varying degrees of restricting carbohydrate intake is shown to work very well in the dietary management of lipoedema. However, there is also a lot of scope for individuals to experiment with their diet and lifestyle choices to reduce the obesity, inflammation, and pain commonly associated with this condition. Finding what works for you and what you'll stick with can require some experimenting. And this is where The Lipoedema Lab can help.
